The IET addresses the growing field of biometric recognition in its new journal

Press Release

2 May 2012

The Institution of Engineering and Technology, one of the world’s leading professional societies for the engineering and technology community, announces the launch of its latest journal, IET Biometrics. Joining the IET’s extensive portfolio of research journals, IET Biometrics explores developments in the growing field of biometric recognition and technology, enhancing the breadth of information available to the research community. Its broad scope will make it a valuable reference for both industry and academia.

Professor Michael Fairhurst, an expert in biometrics at the University of Kent and Editor-in-Chief of IET Biometrics said: ‘This new journal aims to bring together all the diverse strands of research in biometrics, providing a single focus for stakeholders in this area to share their knowledge and keep up to date with cutting edge developments.  In this way we hope it will be a catalyst for promoting collaborations, and in a small but significant way to bridge the gap between what happens in the laboratory and what is required to turn good ideas into practical systems.   IET Biometrics should be considered a major journal devoted to reporting and promoting all aspects of biometrics, and capturing the full richness and diversity of the field.’

Daniel Smith, IET Head of Academic Publishing said: ‘With the IET’s focus including coverage of ‘security in the modern world’, it is extremely timely to be launching a new journal in the field of biometrics.  IET Biometrics brings together both fundamental research and application-led work of high quality, to ensure its value to the biometrics community at large, including government agencies, academic researchers, and relevant commercial organisations with interests in the field.’
The first two issues of IET Biometrics will be available free of charge on the IET’s Digital Library.

The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) future proofs its content with the CLOCKSS Archive

Press Release

8 February 2012

The CLOCKSS Archive is pleased to announce that it has partnered with the IET to preserve its entire digital range in CLOCKSS's preservation archive, located at 12 major research libraries around the world. By archiving with CLOCKSS, the IET has committed to the preservation of its Digital Library which includes IET e-Journals, e-Books, conference and magazine content as well as IET Inspec. This action ensures the IET’s content is freely available to everyone after a "trigger event" and ensures an author's work will be maximally accessible and useful over time.

Diane Richards, Publishing Strategic Relations Manager at the IET said, “We are committed to ensuring that all digital content published by the IET is available in perpetuity and our partnership with CLOCKSS now guarantees that content in the Digital Library will be available to those who require it”.

CLOCKSS Executive Director Randy S. Kiefer adds, "The CLOCKSS Archive welcomes the IET’s digital range into the community's archive.  By archiving with CLOCKSS, the IET has ensured that their various publications in engineering and technology will be available for a worldwide audience now and in the future.  We are grateful, as the IET joins the CLOCKSS Archive, for its generous willingness to preserve its content in a way that secures them for the long-term good of scholars worldwide".

About CLOCKSS:
The CLOCKSS (Controlled LOCKSS) Archive is a not-for-profit joint venture between the world's leading scholarly publishers and research libraries whose mission is to build a sustainable, geographically distributed dark archive with which to ensure the long-term survival of Web-based scholarly publications for the benefit of the greater global research community.

IET Signs Agreement with INASP

Press Release

Stevenage, UK – The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), one of the world’s leading professional societies for the engineering and technology community, signed an agreement with INASP (International Network for the Availability of Scientific Publications) in July  2011. The agreement is to provide certain developing and emerging countries within Africa, Asia and Latin America, access to IET Research and Letters Journals. The result is that users in selected regions are able to gain access to IET resources and other scientific information free of charge or at a significantly reduced cost.

“As a global association, we are continually looking for opportunities to facilitate the exchange of ideas and information and promote the positive role of science, engineering and technology in the world,” says Daniel Smith, Head of Academic Publishing at the IET. “The agreement with INASP is a great example of those efforts.”

INASP works in depth with 23 partner countries and to a lesser extent with over 80 other countries around the world to support global research communication through innovation, networking and capacity strengthening and focusing on the needs of developing and emerging countries. INASP’s current  focus is the ‘Programme for the Enhancement of Research Information’ (PERii). The IET journal content will be offered through PERii starting in 2012.

“Our partnerships are essential to the growth of our organization and provide developing and emerging nations with the relevant scientific information to help them grow through the expansion of local research,” says Anne Powell, Programme Officer, Information Delivery, INASP. “We are very pleased to include the IET content in the PERii programme and we trust the resources provided will be of great benefit to the selected regions.”

The Institution of Engineering and Technology
Announces Steady Growth of its Journals

Press Release - 20 July 2011

Stevenage, UK – The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), one of the world’s leading professional societies for the engineering and technology community, announces significant growth for many of its journals. After the astonishing performance of last year, when all but one of the IET’s journals saw a huge leap in impact factor, the 2010 results indicate pleasingly steady growth across the IET family of journals.

There were especially high performances from individual journals, including IET Renewable Power Generation, which saw its impact factor increase from 1.255 to 2.082; IET Communications, which increased by almost 30% to 0.963; and IET Power Electronics, which received its first impact factor of 1.018.

Electronics Letters, the IET’s flagship title, also increased its impact factor this year. Read its high-profile feature articles and insight letters for free at www.theiet.org/eletters.

“We are very pleased to see our journals continue to grow and be well received,” says Daniel Smith, Head of Academic Publishing, the IET. “The impact factors are just one way we measure the success of our journals and we remain diligent in our efforts to supply the industry with quality content.”
