Cathay Pacific’s New Horizons Award ceremony

Ground-breaking joint programme wins at Cathay Pacific China Business Awards.

A ground-breaking joint programme between an IET Academic Affiliate and an Academic Partner, Queen Mary, University of London, and Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications (BUPT), has recently won the Cathay Pacific New Horizons Award at the Cathay Pacific China Business Awards.

The joint programme, run by these leading science and engineering institutions, allows students, around 200 of whom are also individual IET members, to graduate with two degrees – one from BUPT and one from the University of London. This unique model ensures that students benefit from the best aspects of both systems whilst increasing their global career prospects.

Cathay Pacific’s New Horizons Award recognises a single project or initiative that demonstrates, through evidence, its dedication to China and/or Hong Kong through business innovation, research projects, or examples of environmental or corporate social responsibility activity.

The panel of judges was made up of senior representatives from Cathay Pacific, The China-Britain Business Council, HSBC, and The Daily Telegraph.

Ian Mercer, IET head of International Operations, said: “We have been working very closely with Queen Mary and BUPT in China for over three years now. Our collaboration has provided a considerable degree of positive multi-cultural interaction with students from the programme, particularly at the many well attended IET events and lectures held on the BUPT campus. We are very pleased to see the joint programme being recognised through this award, and extend our heartiest congratulations to them. Our involvement with the joint programme resulted in another two colleges from within BUPT signing up to become IET Academic Affiliates in 2011, guaranteeing that interaction and collaboration between the IET, BUPT, and the joint programme will continue in 2012.”
