The IET is leading on an initiative to re-launch the Churchill Medal Award in partnership with the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology, the Royal Aeronautical Society, the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Institution of Royal Engineers and Society of Operations Engineers.

This prestigious award, inherited from the Institute of Incorporated Engineers (IIE), has been previously presented to individuals such as Sir Frank Whittle (Jet Engine), Sir Geoffrey de Havilland (Aircraft), Sir Christopher Cockerell (Hover Craft) and Professor Alan Wells (Wells turbine for wave power).

First presented in 1952, Sir Winston expressed great enthusiasm for this award, reflecting on the important contribution by engineers of all disciplines to the military needs in the Second World War.

Given the background of the medal and its association with the military, it was deemed appropriate to associate the re-launched medal with the armed forces.

This year's award will be presented at the Professional Engineering Institutions' Annual Defence Lecture on 2 July 2012.

Criteria for the Award

The award is for an individual or a small team (the majority of whom are serving members of the armed forces or were serving at the time) for achievement in engineering and technical advancement in support of military operations during the period of April 2011 to March 2012.

Managers or commanding officers of qualifying individuals or teams are asked to submit written citations. These should not exceed 1000 words and can include a maximum of one diagram and one photograph. A shortened version (approx.100 words) should be provided for printing in the official presentation programme.

Deadline
